Mrs. Betty “Jean” White, 77, of Aiken, SC, entered into rest on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 with her family and friends by her side. Although our hearts are broken, we are at the same time comforted by our faith, knowing that she is now with our Heavenly Father. A Daughter of the late John and Bertha Housworth, Jean was born in El Campo, TX and raised in Port Lavaca, TX. She graduated from Port Lavaca High School and Victoria Business College.
Jean met and married the love of her life and soul mate, Alfred “Al” O. White, Jr. on November 12, 1954. She utilized her business knowledge working for doctors, clergymen; ending her career with Texas Parks and Wildlife in 1973, at which time, Jean began her journey of meeting “silver” friends during her husband’s DuPont career. Jean associated new friends as “silver” and old friends as “golden”; met and had many friends while living in Newark, DE, Orange, TX, Graniteville, SC, Wilmington, NC, and Singapore. Al and Jean retired at Savannah Lakes Village (SLV), McCormick, SC where they immediately connected with a wonderful group of friends from all over the U.S. While living at SLV, Jean enjoyed her favorite exercise “water aerobics and water walking”, playing cards with various groups, and was a member of the Red Hat Society. Jean enjoyed volunteering at the Habitat General Store in McCormick. In 2005, Al and Jean made their final home in Aiken, SC, where she continued to enjoy water exercising and playing cards with various groups / friends. Jean was a member of Aiken Newcomers Club, Town and Country Club, and Cedar Creek Church; also enjoyed volunteering with The Lydia Project.
For those who had the honor to meet and become friends with Jean, knew she was a true friend. As a dear friend recently wrote “You, Jean White, are one of the most “nutritious” people (a joy to be around, full of positive energy and life) that I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.” Jean was all that and more.
In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband, Al White. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy White (Eddie) Wooten of Aiken, SC; two sons, John (Sandy) White of Knoxville, TN, and Jeff (Charlotte) White of Norwood, GA; three grandchildren, Tammy Willis, Amy Sheldon, and Cody Hart; four great grandchildren, Garrett , Kaylnn, Bryce and Reed; brother, Aubrey “Butch” (Joyce) Housworth of Port Lavaca, TX; nephews, Cory, Casey and Craig Housworth; her two special Rag Doll cats, Singa and Thai.
Her family wishes to express sincere thanks to doctors, nurses and staff on 8th North / South floor at University Hospital, Augusta, GA, the nurses and staff at Anchor Health and Rehab of Aiken, SC, and caregiver and staff at Right at Home, North Augusta, SC.
A celebration of life is planned for Jean on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 4pm at Cedar Creek Church, Aiken, SC, with Pastor Phillip Lee officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Abbeville – McCormick Habitat for Humanity, 205 North Main St. McCormick, SC 29835 or The Lydia Project, 1369 Interstate Parkway, Augusta, GA 30903.
