Mrs. Margaret Dudley Smith
Warrenton – Mrs. Margaret Dudley Smith, who resided in Warrenton, GA, entered into rest Wednesday, February 4, 2026, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She was born in 1931 in Wilkes County, GA. She was the daughter of Ralph A. Dudley and Sallie Lee Berry Dudley.
Margaret graduated from Thomson High School and attended Georgia State College for Women (later renamed GCSU) in Milledgeville. Margaret married Herbert Melvin Smith, to whom she was married for fifty-two years. They lived in Warrenton, and she worked in the office of R.A. Dudley Nurseries until the birth of her first child.
Margaret was a devoted wife, supportive mother/ grandmother, and faithful Christian who served and cherished her family, church, and community with dignity and compassion. She was a Sunday school teacher and church leader at Warrenton First United Methodist Church for many years.
Her myriad innovative home cooked dishes, particularly the delicious desserts, which she provided to relatives, guests, and those grieving or in need exemplified her deep and genuine love and concern for others. Although Margaret was often fun-loving, the “boys of all ages” in the family knew that they had better not stumble if she got a stick after them because the little lady might just give them a well-deserved whack on the posterior!
Margaret is survived by her son Steven Smith (Lynn); grandchildren Adam Gilmore (Maile), Hannah Smith (Conner), Scott Smith (Brielle), and Kelly Smith; great-grandchildren Dylan Gilmore, Lani Gilmore, Callie Gilmore, and Hailey Gilmore; sisters-in-law Mary Etna Dudley and Carol Smith; brother-in-law Gene Smith, and many terrific nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son M. Daniel Smith; sisters Sarah Huff, Roselle Burt, Dorothy Kitchens, and brother Howell Thomas (Pete) Dudley.
Graveside services will be held at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, Thomson, GA at 12:00 Noon Thursday, February 12, 2026, with Rev. Sandra Leightner officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the graveside.
