Geraldine Hinesley Obituary

Mrs. Geraldine “Gerry” Averitt Hinesley, age 98, died peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 14, 2021.

Mrs. Hinesley was born in Bulloch County but moved to Jenkins County at the age of 10. She was the daughter of the late Ethel Rackley Averitt and Harold Wallace Averitt, Sr.

She entered Bessie Tift College in 1939 and transferred the following year to the University of Georgia where she graduated in 1943 with an Associate Bachelor degree in English. She was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority at the University of Georgia.

Mrs. Hinesley was an active member of Warrenton First United Methodist Church since 1947 where she was a member and teacher of the Mamie Evans Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Warrenton Garden Club and Burkhalter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. For many years she was a member of the Contract Bridge Club and also the Bide-A-Wee Bridge Club.

She began teaching middle school English in Savannah, GA and then moved to Warrenton, GA to continue her teaching career. There she met and married her husband, Julian Howard Hinesley, Sr. Once they started a family, she left teaching to raise their children. They were married on February 4, 1944, and were together 67 years until his death on November 30, 2011.

Mrs. Hinesley’s faith was of the utmost importance to her and she was a true follower of Christ and a prayer warrior. She loved researching her family ancestry, playing Bridge with friends and on her iPad, spending time with her family and although she was a loving devoted wife to her husband, who was an avid Georgia Tech fan, she never wavered from her support of her beloved Georgia Bulldogs.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hinesley was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Wallace Averitt, Jr. and her sister, Gloria Averitt Ginn. Her survivors include her one daughter, Cynthia M. “Cyndi” Hinesley, Marietta, GA, and her five sons, Dr. J. Howard (Susan) Hinesley, Jr., Cartersville, GA, Harold A. “Hal” (Kathy) Hinesley, Thomson, GA, W. Wallace “Wally” (Cathy) Hinesley, Dothan, AL, Gerald A. (Pam) Hinesley, Conyers, GA and R.
