Elizabeth Hammons Obituary

Elizabeth Cail Newsome Hammons passed away on August 29, 2024 at her home in Eatonton, Georgia. Throughout her extraordinary 45 years, Cail was resilient— unwavering in her faith and commitment to her family.

She was born to James and Susan Newsome on September 28, 1978, the oldest of three daughters. Cail cherished her upbringing in Warrenton where she was a member of First Baptist Church and a graduate of Warren County High School. A talented speaker, Cail attended Georgia College and State University on a full academic scholarship as a member of the debate team. She earned both a B.S. in Political Science and B.A. in Rhetoric, and ultimately, her Master of Public Administration.

In 2003, Cail married the love of her life, Matt Hammons. Together they embarked on 21 years of life and adventure together, their greatest adventure of all being parents to their son, Lee Hammons. Cail was a nurturing and prayerful mother, always encouraging Lee to be his best. Cail’s proudest achievement in life was being Lee’s mother.

Cail forged a meaningful career advocating for the preservation of rural communities across Georgia.  The countless projects she brought to fruition will have a lasting impact in the towns she loved, from her early days with the Milledgeville Convention and Visitors Bureau to her time as the City of Greensboro’s Main Street Manager, and most recently, as the City of Greensboro’s Community Development Director.

Cail is survived by her husband Matt Hammons; son, Lee Hammons; father, James Newsome; and sisters, Leigh Newsome Phillips and Anna Newsome Holcomb. She is preceded in death by her mother, Susan McManus Newsome.

The family will receive family and friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the Family Life Center at First Baptist Church. A celebration of Cail’s life will be held Sunday, September 1, 2024 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Johnson Church Cemetery.

Should loved ones desire, please consider a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in honor of her mother.
