Ellen Melvena Young Mitchell

Berryville, Virginia – Mrs. Ellen Melvena Mitchell, age 87, widow of Mr. Alan Jewell Mitchell, entered into rest Tuesday, June 07, 2022, at The Retreat at Berryville.

Melvena was a native of Wrightsville, Georgia and lived in Gordon Georgia for 61 years before moving to Virginia to be near her daughter.  She was the daughter of the late Dee O. Young and Mary Lizzie Parker Young.  She was a 1951 graduate of Wrightsville High School. Mrs. Mitchell retired from American Textile Mills with over 20 years of service. She was revered by co-workers and those she supervised.  Melvena was a member of White Springs Baptist Church, Gordon, Georgia where she served as the pianist for many years. Her immediate and extended family were her greatest joys and she was greatly loved by all. Melvena was a gentle, kind woman with an abiding love for nature and animals that she imparted to her children.

She was preceded in death by her sister Sarah Webb, and brothers Leroy, Ralph and Franklin Young.  Survivors include her sister Henrietta Buck, of Jupiter, Florida her son, Alan Mitchell, Jr, of Gordon, Ga., daughter Ramona Fiorey (husband Peter), of Lake Frederick, VA, granddaughters Stephanie Gooch (husband Daniel), Gainesville, GA and Erin Fiorey (husband Michael Faber), Chantilly, VA, two great grandchildren, Gunnar Gooch and Phoebe Faber, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Jewell Baptist Church in Jewell, Georgia with the Rev. David Miller officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the historic Jewell School House.

Pallbearers will be Alan Mitchell, Jr, Peter Fiorey, Sammy Young, John Mitchell, and Daniel Gooch.
