Doris Gockel Obituary

Jewell, GA- Mrs Doris Mitchell Gockel, age 92, went to be with the Lord February 28, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family.
Her life will be remembered and celebrated at 1 PM receiving family and friends, followed by a service at 2 PM, on Saturday,March 9, 2019, at Jewell Baptist Church, Jewell, GA. There will also be a brief graveside service at Jewell Baptist Cemetery with David Self and David Miller officiating.
Doris was a native of Jewell, and lived there her entire life aside from 20 years as a resident of St. Louis. She was the daughter of John and Lillian Mitchell and preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Bill Gockel.
Doris, at 16 years old was a graduate of Sparta High School, employed at Warner Robins Air Force Base during WWII as a clerk typist and receptionist for a colonel prior to marriage. When married she followed her husband, Bill, to St. Louis to start their family. Once returning to her home community of Jewell with her family to live in the mid 1960’s, she worked and retired after 25 years as a GS 12 Management analyst at Fort Gordon, Augusta, GA.
Doris’ hobbies included sewing, gardening and reading, along with enjoying her grandchildren. She was also a tremendous caregiver.
Doris was a wife, mother of 2, grandmother of 5 and great grandmother of 8. As a devoted Christian and member of Jewell Baptist Church and Maplewood Baptist Church (St. Louis) she
served faithfully as a Bible teacher, choir member, Sunday School teacher, choir and worship leader, Bible student and in many other capacities. Survivors include brother, William Mitchell, daughter Rebecca Kettenacker of Jewell and daughter Joy Gilmore (John) of Milledgeville;grandchildren Donna, Joanna, Charles, Jenny and
Justin, and great grandchildren Jasmine, Ethan, Dylan, Jasmine, Jakob, Ellie, Sophie and Daria.
